Not as simple as you thought it was
Contrary to popular belief, the “Made in USA” label is not a label that any company can slap into their product. The label is protected by the Federal Trade Commission or the FTC. Strict requirements must be met for a company to be legally able to put said label. These requirements are as follows:
- It requires an item to contain all or virtually all American parts.
- It requires an item to be made or assembled in American factories.
- It requires that all or virtually all raw materials be American sourced.
These strict requirements ensure that every product that carries the label is worthy of such and will have a quality that is of a higher degree than other products of the same build or type.
What does “all or virtually all” mean?
This means that for a product to have said label, its raw materials, parts, or components must be made or sourced from the USA. This is the guarantee that FTC observes strictly as products with the “Made in the USA” label are traditionally thought of to be of high quality. Also, by implementing this strict requirement, companies who want to have the label are required to buy from American companies as mandated by an age-old bill signed in 1933 by then-president Hoover.
Does it still hold the same candle as it did before?
For all intents and purposes, yes. Yes, the “Made in USA” label still means the same thing as it did before. The “Made in the USA” label is a monitored label that not every company can slap into their products ensures that the tradition of quality that is known to come with items labeled as made in USA is still of the same quality as it did before.
